My husband is very organized. It shows in everything he does, including the way he has worked hard on looking back to 2016, and planning 2017 a few weeks ago. While doing that, he looked at journal entries from previous years, seeing what the Lord has done in his life over almost two decades of walk with Christ.
What he found amused him and he had me read a portion of it. It was a prayer he wrote to God in 2006. At that time, he had been a Christian and single for seven years. He was telling God how tired he was to be single. It made no sense to him. He chose the narrow path of purity and service, but he had enough. He was ready for God to send him his wife. Little did he know that it would take twice as long before this promise would materialize.
His choice of words had me laughing to tears. I could imagine my man, fed up, and wishing for something that didn’t seem to be coming at all, asking God to accomplish His promises already!
What he did not know back then, and which we talked about afterwards, is that the very year he lifted that prayer to God, is the year I put my faith in Christ. My life was radically and dramatically changed in 2006. In only a few weeks, I gave my life to Christ, abandoned my old self-destructive ways, got baptized in water, and by the Holy Spirit. I became thirsty for God’s Word like I never was never thirsty for anything else before or after.
What we realized is, while my husband did not know what was going on, while he had enough, God was working miracles. He just couldn’t see the whole picture yet. Today, a decade later, not only did he get his promise for a wife, but I am carrying in me another beautiful promise, and she is strong, kicking hard!
I, the broken girl who felt rejected and unloved, was always God’s precious daughter, and my husband’s—as he calls me—Rebecca, his promised. Funny enough, Jacob worked for 14 years in exchange for his beloved Rebecca. My hubby waited 14 years for me from the moment Jesus became his Savior and our wedding day.
God’s People Throughout History
Many stories in the Bible testify to God working miracles in His people’s lives while they just couldn’t always understand what He was doing. Here are just a few.
- Joseph — He had dreams of what was to come and it led to persecution. Yet, throughout different ordeals, Joseph saw God’s promises coming to pass. (Read Genesis 37-Genesis 50)
- Widow of Zarephath — She was quite desperate, but still listened to the man of God’s instruction and her life and that of her son were saved. (Read 1 Kings 17:7–24)
- We can read many more examples in Hebrews 11.
My hope is that you will find encouragement in my family’s humble story, and that of several Heroes of Faith as recorded in the Bible. May you take this for yourself and know that what God has promised, Hs is faithful to accomplish. He’s not finished with you yet. Don’t lose heart. Go deeper, and put your faith in God.
