3 Amazing Things That Always Happen When You Pray

June 8, 2016

Man, I don’t know what to pray for! My colleague told me. I could really identify with his concern because that is often me. I remember when I was just starting to believe in God like him, how confused I was about prayer. Does it even change anything? Or am I just talking in the air like a weirdo?

Today, at times, I still have to battle the idea that prayer has no power. If God will do what he desires anyway, why bother? Well, here are three amazing things that always happen when we give prayer and God a chance, making it worth it every time. Let’s take a look.

1. You Tap Into the Power of the Holy Spirit

Sure enough, we don’t know how to pray, or what to pray for. Romans 8:26 tells us just that, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” So here’s what happens, when we do pray, the Holy Spirit helps us, and he knows what to pray for. In other words, we will be praying for things we didn’t even know God wanted to do. You know how sometimes you start praying, and all of a sudden, you’re filled with so many things you burn to pray for? If it’s never happened to you, keep praying and trust God, he will fill you up.

2. You Find Peace Beyond Anything You Know

Sure, we are not promised to get our way through prayer. And honestly, I think it’s a good thing. If I got all I asked, I’d be very miserable today. God knows what’s best for me, and he knows what’s best for you. We could also choose to make things happen on our own. But that would both mean to reject God’s best, and to reject his gift. What gift? A gift that nothing and no one in this world can ever give you. And it’s peace. It may sound like a flimsy gift you’d rather discard, but think about it for a second. If you’re anything like me, you’re all too familiar with anxiety. It can plague your life and make you on edge. Then there are worry and fear. Think of this time when you felt like your brain was about to split in two because you didn’t know what to do? Now tell me if peace is that flimsy after all? Besides, God’s promise is no small thing; he promises peace that surpasses all understanding, a peace that will guard your heart and mind. Basically, it doesn’t matter what you go through, God has a provision of peace for you if you’ll pray. And his peace is like no other. After all, he is the Prince of Peace.

3. Your Faith Increases

When you stop doing whatever it is you are doing in the madness that life can be today, when you press pause, even for a minute, and turn to the One who can do all things, you are making an extraordinary statement. You are saying, “I submit my own desires, unbelief, and fears to the One who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we may ask or think.” And that, my friend, is building spiritual muscle, and it defeats the enemy of our souls. Because when we pray, chains are broken, souls are healed and lives are transformed. We can’t see it all, but there are powerful things happening in the spiritual world when we pray. “Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.‘” This Jesus, my sister, my brother, lives in you. And in His name we pray. “There is power in the name of Jesus, to break every chain.”

Take courage today, and defeat the temptation to surrender to life’s blows. Say a word of prayer, take heart, the Holy Spirit is at work, and will strengthen you and empower you. And if you can’t find it in you to pray, turn to a friend, to a relative, to anyone who can pray for you. I am praying for you, whoever you are, wherever you are.
